My sister photos: Latvia, Daugavplis

Good morning to everyone! So the New Year 2010 has started. I wonder what will it bring to us? I would like to start this year with beautiful pictures made by my sister. Photos of Latvian city, Daugavpils. My city! My sister sees beauty everywhere. (Click this link to see her collection of pictures)

There are many readers who come on my blog to get more information about indians/sikhs in Latvia. As I don't live in LV at the moment, I know very nice blog about Riga (capital of Latvia) in English with a lot of pictures. Go to Riga.in If you have any question about Latvia, leave your comment and I will answer.

All the best!

Raising child as a Sikh

Raising child as a Sikh...

How? When to start educating? I have so many questions in my head???

How can I successfully raise a Sikh? Or should I give a choice to my kid to select what he or she wants? Free will opportunity?

I would like to know about other people stories... Especially from mixed-race couples? We all know about hardship of Sikh parents in the west trying to keep Sikh identity. So many boys now prefer to be clean shaven and not to wear a turban, even patka... Even in Punjab girls prefer to marry clean shaven boys....I know from my relatives stories...

I know it's a hard job to raise a Sikh but hopefully I will succeed in it.... Please leave comments

Can sikhs marry non-sikhs?

Can sikhs marry non-sikhs? Can sikh marry a catholic, christian, white, someone from other religion, gora? Should sikhs and white people marry? All these questions bring people to my Gora Sikh blog. Everyday someone searches for those answers. There is no universal answer to that. It really depends on parents of the couple (both sides), tolerance, upbringing, personal attitude and willingness to be together and work on relationship.

In my personal experience, I had no problem at all. I'm blessed with my in-laws. There were few relatives who mentioned that there are enough punjabi girls. And what? Gurus taught that everyone is equal. My father-in-law asked them not to come to our Amritsar wedding. I love his spirit (my father's-in-law).

I've been a personal council-psychologist for many of my friends -mixed couples and I know that you have to work hard to succeed. You have to be strong and open with each other and your families. Discuss everything before the marriage...I mean everything... How to celebrate each other festival? Wedding? Religion and upbringing of kids? Becoming sikh or not?

If you are reading this please share your story or views. Yours Gora Sikh

Who are the Sikhs? Great You Tube Video from Singhster1

"Who are the Sikhs?" is a great video representing Sikhism and it's people. Thanks to the director.

I suggest you to go to comments section after watching the video. When I'm in the net, I always look for new info or debates about goras. Here we go...

Moreover what do you know about all gora Sikhs for you to claim that
they are all fake and out to brainwash others!!???!!

Im sorry but THIS IS TOTALLY AGAINST SIKHI to discriminate against anyone!!. My punjabi sardar cousin is married to a gori girl for the past 15 years!!!! They have 3 beautiful gursikh kids!. So why do you think that is so!?!! You need to have an very open mind, if Guru ji thought like you then there would be no Panj Pyare's!!!! Please don't judge anyone!!

Good words Singhster1 ( I assume this is a director of the movie trying to interact with one of the commenters. Sikhism is about equality... Why we Goras are not trusted?

Jesus camp and God's army

Yesterday I saw a programme about children of Jesus Camp. It's a camp where children taught to become Evangelical Christian soldiers. The are radicalised at very young to become preachers of God. God's army? See www.jesuscampthemovie.com. I saw a lot of anger and tears. They were chanting and they were nearly unconscious. Words like goverment and war were used by grown-up preachers.

Being raised Christian, I accept all religions but it feels that many people nowadays use word religion as a political tool. One young boy in the movie said that when he sees non-christian, he feels bad, unconnected and it felt that he hated them.... at this young age...?

I believe that they are brainwashed at this age... seven years old to twelve years old.... They don't really make decisions... They do what they told....

From my personal experience, I can tell you that I was able to understand religion when I was 16 or 17.... even now I'm realising who I am and what religion means to me. I'm very happy that I dicsovered sikhism... it wasn't pushed on me... wasn't forced....

White Sikhs

Have you ever seen them? Interacted with them?
The more I reseached, the more interesting this topic became.
White Sikhs !?! Someone finds it amazing, someone doesn't realise they exist.
Have you ever seen white sikh and what is your view?
There are some white sikhs in America, Europe and Asia. How many? I would not be able to answer but I would like to know.

White Sikhs - they follow sikhism more a lot of punjabis living abroad, they speak Punjabi fluently and can read Gurmukhi and Guru Granth Sahib and some of them are fully amrit dari. Although Sikhism does not have missionaries and it does not actively seek converts, people are eager to know more about Sikhism.

"Sikhism is a way of life, a universal faith without prejudice towards others, as you've shown with this video. People of all races, cultures can practice this wonderful faith. It doesn't preach, but offers insight into how to live a good life, to be respectful towards others, while leaving open interpretation of our universal creator."- you tube comment about this video.

Sikhism is the most youngest religion in the world and it's not well known in Europe and other parts of the world. More and more people discovering Sikhism in the 21st century.
Does it make you proud that someone chooses/embraces your religion?

If you are interested in this topic you might want to stop here next time for more of my blog...if you wish...

What is gora?

What is gora?
I found definition of GORA in http://www.urbandictionary.com/. Written by 3 different people

1. Term used by Indians to refer to white people. Literally means "white". "Gori" is used to refer to a white woman. Not derogatory.

Bill Clinton is a gora.
Jennifer Aniston is a hot-ass gori.

2. Gora -a white man or a man with pale skin. Gori is a white girl or a girl with pale skin.

oh kidaa goreyo teek taak hor sna pher gora koi nami taaji?/good day white man are you well have u any new news to tell me?

3. Gora- word used by Indians to describe the white people in US and UK.
He is a white English/ American (Gora)

Do you have your own explanation? Do you feel it's not polite word or is it ok? What's your view?
